Husband is taking a job in Ft Lauderdale. We are relocating from NC (but are originally from Boston). We have 3 kids, 2 in high school, 1 in 8th grade. (Suck time to move my kids i know but....) Where is best area just outside of Ft Lauderdale? Would like to be no more than 20 miles or so out of Ft. Lauderdale (if possible?!) We are low-key, easy going people, but need best public schools possible (as anyone would want) -- Boca & Davie seem to be top on the list. Are there any other cities with decent high schools around there we could check into? If anyone has any input/recommendations it would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Depending on where in Ft. Lauderdale you are talking about, Boca may or may not be an option. It's nice, but the drive down can be a chore, especially if you are talking around downtown Ft. Lauderdale.

School wise, Weston has the best schools - Cypress Bay is the high school. On the western side of Davie the school would be Western High. It's not as highly rated as Cypress Bay, but is still a pretty good school. You also have Cooper City High in that general region which is a good school as well. You can look at greatschools.net and compare them all.

Now when I say good schools, I mean they are really above anything else in the area. My oldest son attends Cooper City, but I wouldn't have an issue sending him to Cypress or Western. They're all in nice areas. Geographically they are all fairly close so you get pretty much the same type of kids in each.

If you have any questions about specific neighborhoods, feel free to ask.

Boca and Weston are the top 2 choices. Parkland is nice too and has a more natural rustic look as opposed to the med-look that the rest of South FL has. Boca is the best because it has the most shopping and is closest to the beach. Weston is a nice housing community, but lacks shopping other than Publix.

Both Weston and Boca are slightly more than a 20 minute commute from Fort Lauderdale during peak times. Depending on which part of Fort Lauderdale and which part of Boca, the commute can vary between 24-50 minutes. The traffic on 95 between Ft. Lauderdale and Boca during peak times can be rough. The commute to/from Weston is now a cakewalk because they recently re-did 595. You'll hardly tap the brakes.

Weston area southwest Broward, Parkland and south Boca (which is north of Ft Lauderdale) are close to each other and very good areas for schools and crime rates. If commuting by I-95(if living more east) it can be a slow drive and much worse during season Nov-Apr but the Turnpike (if living more west) is much better.
