Hi, I was wondering where is a great place to watch stars at night in any of these locations. preferably miami or key largo, but ft. lauderdale is fine too. What I wanted to do is take my wife with my convertible to a really nice spot where we can see stars and have a late night picnic. Thanks in advance!

There is no great place - too much light pollution. The best you can get is to take a boat a few miles offshore or go out towards South Bay from Weston or on that Tamiami Trail, preferable on a low humidity day.

Dark-Sky Site Directory: Florida

Observing site: South Florida Everglades

Address Alligator Alley

I live in Weston and when I go to Naples, one of the things I love about the trip is how clear the sky looks.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the links they were very helpful. If I am not mistaken key largo and a few other keys is pretty dark at night. I seem to recall a couple of years ago when I was in key largo and was amazed how many stars it was. If only I knew of a great scenarie to completely enjoy the experience. If I were perhaps by a bay with the moon shinning down the ocean that would be gorgeous and my wife's breathe would be taken away.

Option 1: If you go to Markham Park on Saturday evening you will get more than just watching the stars from a convertible - they have a small observatory. It is quite popular with star gazers and its quite enjoyable. It's run by volunteers.

The Broward County website does not seem to mention this but you can find the info here:
Fox Observatory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From there, you can enjoy your picnic under the stars from within the park.

Option 2: Another option and this is more in keeping with your post.

Take 595 to 75 towards Naples. Take 27 North. Within 2 miles or so you will see areas where you can pull off and park. Now, on a clear night, you will really see the stars as you will be just outside of the city lights, etc.

Enjoy!!
