Finally, after years of having a Main Street Program that repeatedly advised the Mayor and Commissioners in Wilton Manors to plant shade trees and reduce the motor vehicle lanes on Wilton Drive, the City is finally moving forward with plans to take care of the speeding automobile problems on Wilton Drive by reducing the number of traffic lanes and putting in much need green spaces along Wilton Drive.
There have been plenty of pedestrians hit and killed by speeding motor vehicles on Wilton Drive but it finally took a protest demonstration in front of City Hall and the negative media attention it garnered after a well liked local man was hit and killed by a woman driving above the speed limit while texting, for Mayor Resnick to finally address the issue of making Wilton Drive, a City designated entertainment district, safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. The lanes will be reduced along with the speed limit to make Wilton Drive more like the downtown Fort Lauderdale section of Las Olas Boulevard instead of continuing to resemble the high speed, heavy traffic filled Federal Highway.
Of course, the car dependent crowd that would drive to the bathroom if they could is complaining about having the lanes on Wilton Drive reduced and they're wondering where they are supposed to drive their cars at high speeds when they won't be able to do so on Wilton Drive.
Well, don't worry folks! The rest of the Fort Lauderdale area is very well set up to ignore the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists as it's all about you and your car! And if you still want to visit Wilton Manors after it's been set up to not let you drive at breakneck speeds on Wilton Drive, here's a novel idea that may have never, ever crossed your mind as your motor vehicle guzzles down gas and puts out the greenhouse gasses that are causing the ice caps to melt and have made South Florida Ground Zero in the United States for flooding problems due to Global Warming; Get out of your car and use those things called legs and feet that you push the brake and gas pedals on your car with and try using them to walk or to ride a bike to where you want to go in Wilton Manors instead of driving.

When I was about 2 years old, momma taught me two valuable rules: 1) Look both ways before crossing a street, and 2) Don't walk in traffic.

Great post. What traffic calming does is, not only make an area way more visually attractive, but will detour non-Wilton Manors commuters away from using the immediate area as a transit highway. Studies confirm that both commercial & residential property values rise (in some cases considerably) after traffic calming is put in effect. There will always be naysayers who fear short term inconvenience & change. But, there's no upmarket charm or sense of place in a business district made up of nothing but asphalt parking lots sitting hard on a busy highway. This will end up being the best development for residents & especially the better businesses in WM.

So all the people that used to drive through Wilton Manors... they aren't going to disappear. They will just go create an even worse traffic problem elsewhere, while being frustrated about their worsened commute. No?

No. That is not the history of traffic calming studied. Commuters gravitate to the highest speed route to their destination. Most commuters will even chose a route which takes a bit more time in order to be able to drive faster - with fewer obstacles. But, traffic calming can be contagious to nearby organized communities for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, commuters end up moving to highway areas which aren't politically organized or where no one cares. Often low income communities.

Unfortunately, many low income areas suffer from lack of political organization & representation. Apparently, Wilton Manors doesn't suffer from such lack of clout, as evidenced by the expensive traffic calming taking place now on Wilton Drive.

What a great idea! I can't even count the number of times I've almost been mowed down crossing Wilton Drive bar hopping.

Yeah, it's an area with a lot of pedestrians so traffic calming certainly made sense there.

I like that Fort Lauderdale did the same with the stretch of 13th St from 4th to 9th Ave. And I still use it as a thoroughfare to get from Powerline or Andrews to 15th Ave or Federal.
