One of the trends that started in other urban areas of the U.S. is going to be tried here with the construction of a shared housing high rise where the shopping complex at the Riverwalk was recently torn down after most of the businesses closed down there due to the lack of former city administrations working to attract people to visit downtown with things like free parking in the evening, cultural events and the like that other cities provide to keep their downtowns vibrant in the evening instead of turning into ghost towns like downtown Fort Lauderdale does.

The concept of the shared housing consists of apartments set up where the tenants have their own private rooms but have shared common areas for eating, etc. Hopefully, this will bring some younger people to the downtown area to live as downtown Fort Lauderdale currently is not succeeding as a destination place for tourists or locals such as the downtown areas of West Palm Beach, Hollywood, etc., are with their mix of cultural events, farmer markets, antique markets, art fairs, outdoor cafes, etc.
