We're flying in to FLL and visiting some relatives in Pembroke Pines for a week around Christmas and the car rentals are running about $560. Hertz wants $677 for a compact. FLL has always been kind of expensive for car rentals but obviously this is an especially lucrative week.

I am thinking about just forgetting the rental and using Uber/Lyft instead. We're probably not traveling around all that much; hang out at the relatives' place, go out for dinner, maybe spend one day in the Everglades. I think Uber could cover all of this except maybe the Everglades part; we could rent a car for just one day for that.

From what I read on another thread, there's an overflow of Uber/Lyft drivers in the metro area, so you'd think it wouldn't be that hard to get a ride most of the time.

Any thoughts?

We're a bit north of FLL and here every time you pull up Uber, there's about 4 cars roaming around in our general vicinity. I would think it would be pretty easy to go Uber in FLL, what with the cruise terminal being there, as well as the airport.

I don’t know what website you’re looking at and it’s giving you that ridiculous price. I just looked at Budget’s pricing and they have cars for $355. I’m renting a car around that timeframe as my vehicle is in the shop, and for 4 days my total was $130, but I’m picking it up closer to Miami. Get a rental not at the airport, as those will always be more expensive. Uber will add up very quickly. You will be looking at around $30-$50 one way to get from FLL to Pembroke Pines.

Check carrentals.com

I would highly recommend a car in Fort Lauderdale. It is still a very car dependent city. You could get away without a car in Downtown Miami or South Beach

Hmm, that price seems high even for a high-demand time. But perhaps you have certain needs/size/minivan which would make sense.

To answer your question (I think) it certainly is very easy to get uber/lyft in the entire region. I live in Miami and fly out of FLL quite a bit and have used uber/lyft to get to/from the airport maybe a dozen times. It's about equal with the number of times I have driven and the number of times I have taken tri-rail+shuttle. You definitely don't have to worry about availability. And so it becomes a rather straightforward analysis on cost. Both uber and Lyft offer fare estimates that can give you an idea, although surge pricing can shift those numbers. Also, no idea how large your family is but remember the basic cars on both services can only carry up to 4 people.

So up to you on how convenient/inconvenient it is plus the number of trips you expect to make.

I live close to Pembroke Pines and use Uber/Lyft a lot. I confirm your source. It's easy to find a Uber/Lyft ride. If you want to know more about the average cost, PM me.

(But I also agree with others. First, find a better car rental rate.)

So I discovered that it's OK to use my employer's corporate discount code. It cut my Hertz price by like 60%! So I'll go with them.

With all the crime, flooding, immigration, homeless, environmental issues killing Florida right now (according to the local gloom and doom dude) you could probably just steal a car and drive it for a week! Heck, when it needs gas, just pull into a gas station and wait for someone else to fill their car and then steal that one next!

You would have a great story for your vacation and you would save money too!

Where did the OP ask for opinions about crime, flooding, immigration, homeless, environmental issues? Oh wait, he didn’t.

Move along troll.
