I read that a sheet metal roof is the best roof for resisting up to 125 mph of sustained hurricane winds. Asphalt shingle, which I have, is rated to withstand only 90 mph of sustained wind. 90 mph max was stated on the packaging of the new asphalt shingles. I was surprised, but my original roof was being torn off when the shingles arrived.
Also I read that sheet metal roofs are affordable. Could anyone help me out on the real deal with sheet metal roofs?

I have the heard the opposite....these tin roofs are extremely expensive and that's why you rarely see them. Get architectural shingle instead if you are going to do shingles.

Some years ago we priced a metal roof for our 2800 sq ft home and it was double the cost of a barrel tile roof. Welcome to South Florida. I was under the great misconception that we could use the same roof as many of the farm houses use in other parts of the country, but in south Florida they have a "gotcha" approach. Now this was some years ago.

In today's market, there is a newer product which is a barrel tile metal roof which is worth looking into. After Wilma, we replaced the roof in our office building with this newer product. And our architect friend also replaced his roof with this product. It was priced right. And it comes in different configurations.
