I'm about to move elsewhere within the next to years for college and my fiance' is coming with me. I'm white, he's black, and I'm sick of dealing with racism. I also don't want to live around close-minded rednecks because I have all my life. I don't want to be discriminated for being in an interracial relationship and I want my children to be happy. I'm from central Illinois, a town with less than 1,000 people. There isn't violence, but only 3 black people live in my area and no other races besides white.

I do understand that "wherever you go, there will be some racism," but I'd like to be around more interracial couples, in a more diverse area, and I want to move somewhere warm. I've always loved Florida, but yet I haven't stayed there for more than a few weeks.

What are your opinions on Ft. Lauderdale? I've heard some bad things about the deep south but that Florida is different, etc. Do you know of any places in Florida where there aren't acts of violence against blacks/interracials/etc. and where there isn't a lot of segregation? Feedback? Thanks!

It may be myth - but with the exception of central Davie (I think its myth at this point) no one in South Florida cares. In South Florida - there are too many different types of people - from a gagillion places for anyone to even care - they have bigger problems to worry about. Enjoy! it will be an interesting change for you - I hope you really enjoy the move.

No problem in SoFla. NoFla, is a whole 'nother story, though.

Northern (and Central) Florida are the pits when it comes to the deep south racism (and that's not just white against black, it's very much black against white as well)

One of the pluses of living in south Florida is the level of tolerance because we live in such a diverse community. There are lots of mixed couples as a matter of fact, my dear friend (an African American woman) just married a young white man - people just don't care here. The very few that do don't even make a bleep on the radar.

A lot of people in S FL are too caught up in themselves and their day to day hassles to worry about others.

Yes and many people in some other parts of the country find too much time on their hands and try to dictate who people should date or not. The friendliness is only an excuse to get information about your personal life and talk behind your back. But who cares right? The smiling and waiving is worth the lack of privacy and backstabbing.
