Had someone out today to service air unit. Of course they are recommending a whole new unit be put in. I want to get a few more people out to look at it and give their thoughts. I am new to the area and have no idea of who is good or not. Any help would be appreciated!

We used First Class which has great reviews on Angies with great success. We also called out Coastal and Core both of which have an A rating for quotes as well. First Class wasn't the cheapest but they were competitive and middle of the pack. They sent out a tech rather than a sales guy which always sits better with me. They did point out a couple of extra problems as the job progressed but fixed them without adding to there original estimate. Their workers have been in the business for ages and their manager as well as the original tech who came out both stopped in on the job to make sure things were progressing without issue. I think either of those three would have done a fine job for us and I did not feel like they were trying to up sell us on any extras.

I would certainly avoid Direct Heating and Cooling. They do a lot of annoying telemarketing and they have a horrible rating.

I use them... And they are often cited in the newspress when Tell Mel needs to consult an AC pro.

Custom Cooling repairmen work on commision so the more they get you to buy the more $ they make personally. I know many of the ac places work this way. I'm not saying they wouldn't be fair or do a good job, but I personally would find someone that's income was not based on how much they tell you is wrong.

Reminds me of my ari conditioning story... My unit broke down the last day before we to left to head back to PA (mind you the unit looks like it is 20 years plus). At the time I just bought my condo and put about $10,000 into renovations and furnishings. I could have thrown up. I called Crown and the guy (owner) came out... told me I needed a new unit, but proceeded to spend about 45 minutes fiddling with it. Long story short, he ended up fixing it and told me to call him when it failed and he would quote me a price for a new one. Charged me around 85.00 for the service call. That was over 3 years ago and the damn thing is still going strong. When I do buy I am calling Crown back. Sorry don't have the number here in PA.

TXBelle,

About 7 years ago, I was part of a BNI group and we had an A/C guy in our group who owned Arctic Air. My A/C needed repairs at the time so I gave him a shot but I later regretted that decision when I learned that he charged me $200 for a job that took 15 minutes to complete, and the part only cost him $7. I'm not sure if he's even in business anymore.

My go to guy is Mario Krommes of Krommes AC. I've also had good results with Synergy Air. Good luck to you.
