Hi everyone! I am thinking of moving to Ft. Myers sometime soon. Right now I am living in Maryland and the taxes and nanny state laws are KILLING me!! I lived in Ft. Myers from 2005-2007 and rented an apartment off McGregor (Bay Harbor). I would like to move back to that area, but want to buy. I don't really want to pay an HOA fee, but it seems like that's not an option. Could someone tell me a place that has reasonable HOA fees (or none preferably). I don't mind cutting my own grass, or hiring someone to do it for me, and I like to do a little gardening. I don't have any children, and don't plan on having any, so schools are not a big issue. I basically just want to be near the beach and in an area with little crime. I will be selling the house I am living in now, and should be able to afford something around 100-120K. Can anyone help me out??

I hear ya on the HOA gouging! HORRIBLE fees that sometimes embarrass the property tax fees. I looked into so many coastal FL towns, only to be put off by the enormous HOA fees. $980 a month??? REALLY? YIKES!

I hope someone in the area is able to offer some good/helpful information. I'll be reading along with ya.

I would suggest SW or SE Cape Coral......affordable and safe but 20 minutes to the beaches.Well worth it.

Just be careful with hoa's. The new flood insurance could really make these fees soar soon. At least with a small house you are more in control of the cost. Get an elevation cert if it is in a flood zone and insurance quotes on anything you want to look at to buy before you sign for anything.

I am amazed of the amount of homes, especially in Cape Coral that have so much to offer for such a low cost compared to the rest of the nation. I just retired from the military and have lived in many places throughout the U.S. A single family home with pool and sometimes lake or canal access for under 200,000 is hard to find any where but here.......Great place to live.

Cape Coral being away from the water allows for lower pricing and lower estimated flood insurance policies, I'd imagine. ??

You would be right sometimes. But a lot of the areas with out sewer and water have no drains and still do flood. Look at North Ft Myers on the cape side it flooded bad this year. It is still a great place for waterfront living. You just have to be careful when you buy.
