Mine has steadily stayed where it was, just below the skimmer housing. So I guess we have a leak at this juncture.

If the water level goes down to a certain level but will not go any lower, that is a good tool to try and locate the source. You know at least the leak is not at the bottom, or half, or a light fixture (if you have one). Now you know where to start looking.

I'm wondering if it's the concrete steps. There is a hairline crack at that level.

You want to simulate the pool in the bucket as much as possible. I had a leak in my pool last year. I was losing about an inch per day. Over time I noticed the water level never went any lower than the skimmer (which will burn out your pump). The leak turned out to be the skimmer throat (plastic). It was a pretty easy fix. If you need to have a pro look at it I highly recommend Hydroscout. Very reasonable, fair, pro!
I have a small pool, but an inch a day = 70+ gallons/day. It adds up$$$$.

Thanks!

You mean because you don't have city water? You're not talking about the reclaimed water used for watering the lawn?

A pool cover will cut evaporation as well as keeping the heat in. If you prove that you don't have a leak, get a pool cover.

We had a DRY DRY summer here in Tennessee. .it didn't rain for weeks and we noticed it too...sometimes it stayed up...then one day we'd look and it was down. .Frustrating. ..We just put the cover on since even though it's still warm here the bazillion trees we have around the pool are dropping their leaves and we just can't keep up...Going to worry about it next April...

If you need a leak detection you can call Jackson Pool Service. They handled our leak and sometimes offer specials. They were the least expensive we found and we shopped around for an entire week. My girlfriend found them through facebook and they have a website. https://www.jacksonpoolservice.com/
