The house that we (knock on wood) will close on next week has well water and the home inspector said that we would probably need an iron filter (along with testing) for the well water because it has an orange color to it. He said that it's still relatively safe, but we'd prefer to have clear water.

Anyway, how much are we looking at for a new iron filter and testing of the water system?

FWIW, it's a smaller 3 BR, 2 BA house (under 1500 sq. ft).

Depends on how 'handy' you are. A Brim Filter, just for 'Iron' removal, can be had for less then $400 if you are capable of installation.

Best bet is to get your Water tested, preferably by a Company not selling Treatment Systems, then Google is your friend. Research, then research some more, and when you think you've done enough, research even more. Be as 'informed' as you possibly can before making a decision.
