This "thing" for lack of a better word has been on the wall in our hallway for as long as we've lived here. I have no idea what it is. It has a cover for it, but took that off to show the insides. Does anybody know what this could be? Sorry for the blurry photos.

My first guess would be an old thermostat for the A/C. My second guess would be a doorbell. My third guess would be something related to an alarm system.

Any of those fit?

I noticed it says "Front", "Rear" and I can't read the other word..."Trams?" That wouldn't be a doorbell would it? I would either think an alarm or an old A/C like hypocore mentioned.

Trans is what it says. Thanks. I never thought of it being the doorbell. I'll check that out and let you know. Once again, thanks!

Yeah it's a doorbell. Trans is "transformer." Gotta step the power down from 120 volts to 12. When someone presses the doorbell, the solenoid pulls the spring-loaded piston down, and when the solenoid releases the piston, the spring launches it into the metal plate (which is essentially a xylophone bar).

looks like an old transformer for a door bell - way back in the day, I took a big old lantern battery and hooked it up to a bell and a switch and took it to school for Science Day show-n-tell
