need to replace some old ceiling fans in house we bought for vacation home--and get ones with lights in them or get light kits cause we are having electrician do the install and make sure we have ceiling lights that way...

found site that gave ratings for energy efficiency and rate of air flow
Hunter fans which we have owned before and I though were really good--and pretty mediocre...
The Minka fans are pretty good for the money
and they have quite a few hugger styles which you need in home with 8 ft ceilings...

I recently purchased two Minka-Aire Concept I and tried to have them installed by my electrician and I was very disappointed. One made a grinding noise right off the bat (returned) and the other makes a slight whirring noise on setting 2 (but not on settings 1 or 3). It also had to have its blades balanced with weights to not wobble.

They look great, but I am disappointed by their quality.

I also have Casablanca fans (those with the new XLP motor rather than the traditional direct drive motor) and they have been exceptionally quiet and wobble-free.

Default RE: Mink Aire fans

I have had a very good experience with Minka Aire Concept 2 fans. They are great for 8 foot ceilings, highly reliable, look very high end, quiet, and install easily, and come in 44" and 52". Unfortunately, they have risen in price somewhat since first introduced several years ago. I had 3 installed in a prior home, which is now a rental, and never had a problem, over a period of about 8 years now. My experience of course my not be representative of all Minka Aire fans.

The ones we had installed in our FL house are working fine
I had three outdoor fans for the lanai with lights and two in guest bedrooms
the one in my husband's office/guest room is small but puts out whirlwind of a breeze--the electrician that installed it commented on how efficiently it worked...
of course we haven't used them long enough to have any durability report
but they are quiet and work find so far...
I got Casablanca for our bedroom and front living area because my husband wanted a move conventional looking fan for those areas...
and I have no problem with Casablanca--they have been great for decades...

some of the rooms ours were installed in needed to have the proper kind of electrical box used for the fan install--
it makes the fan more sturdy so it does not go off-balance and makes the wiring more safe...
maybe that is problem with your install--the electrician did not upgrade what you don't see...
it is an added cost...
just like using the right type of wall switch if you want light/fan to be adjustable -- not every switch works...

My electrician uses ceiling fan rated boxes. The exception was for the Minka Concept I (because it replaced another fan that was already installed on a beam).

i have an old casablaca stealth that has been problem free for years and it runs 27-7. and i just purchased a Casablanca stealth dc so we will see how long that one holds up. i'm sure you'll see complaints on the inter webs about the motherboard blowing out and it costing customers 120-150 to replace it just for the part. well that's due to electrostatic eletricty in the air. but i would never buy another dept store or hadware store fan again!!! i love my stealth's it moves some serious air around and the remote is a nice feature as well.
