Hello,

I am going to be moving into town from Dallas and would like to live downtown. I will be working just off of 820 about 5 miles west of 35. I would be taking 35 to 820 west to work every morning. How bad is the traffic? Does it crawl at a slow speed or is it fairly fluid?

thanks!

I don't know about how I-35 traffic will be during rush hour (northbound in the morning and southbound in the evening). But going west on Loop 820 won't be as bad as going east, so that's good news for you. If traffic is bad, perhaps you can take a back road from downtown, such as Rt. 287, which runs north-northwest toward Loop 820.

So you are saying that traffic is heading away from the city in the morning (north bound) and towards the city at night? Interesting, that is the opposite of what I would have expected.

No, sorry for the confusion. I was referring to the direction you'd be traveling. I assume traffic would be lighter NB on I-35 from downtown than SB, but I haven't been on that highway during rush hour. I have been on the top part of Loop 820 during rush hour - such as when I had to go to Dallas for a week (I live in northwest FW). Traffic was bad in both directions, but worse eastbound in the morning (i.e. toward Dallas).

I hope this makes sense.

So 820 westboung was also bad? I was raised in a small town in the midwest and its hard for me to tolerate driving five miles per hour on the way to work in the morning

In general, WB on Loop 820 is not as bad as EB, but you can't even do the speed limit during rush hour esp. if there's an accident or bad weather. Luckily in your case, since you'd be going west of I-35 on 820, that won't be so bad; you can usually do the speed limit or more anytime of the day.

Traffic on the top of Loop 820 is worst between I-35 and where Rt. 183 splits off that has the worst traffic. That's mostly b/c of FW's retarded decision to make 820 only 2 lanes wide in each direction there. If they expand that to 3 or 4 lanes like the way the west half of 820 is, then most of the traffic problems on that part of the loop would disappear.

820 Westbound toward 35 (from say, Hurst) is HORRIBLE at rush hour. I do believe that 820 headed East to I-35 would be better, but I never travel that direction.

the north 820-35 corridor in Hurst/NRH/Keller area SUCKS--it is one of the worst designed pieces of hiway construction in TX--period--and it is not going to get any better because more people are moving out that way---going N or S on 820/35 from downtown is crowded/narrow and busy anytime because of all the business related travel...

DON"T plan your commute on that major hiway---see if there are alternative city streets that might take a little longer sometimes even those (like Belknap) are getting pretty busy and congested but still travel better than the hiway...IMO
