Here it comes, another non Texan trying to figure out Fort Worth (Denton: house, school district) - Texas (TX) - City-Data Forum

I know you get this all the time, but I really need some help on this search. It looks like we could be moving to Fort Worth in the near future. I wanted to get some information on the area so we can start to understand the best places to live.

My wife's job would be on the north side of Fort Worth near Elizabethtown. We'd like the commute to be as short as possible but definitely under 30 min. We have two young boys, so we are looking for a great school district and a very safe place to live. I really know nothing about Texas and what the towns/suburbs are like around that area. Is it more like classic suburbia or are there some older suburb/cities in that area that have a downtown type feel to them. We live in a great suburb in Cincinnati where you can walk to the grocery store, farmer's market, stores, restaurants. It has an old downtown area feel as opposed to cookie cutter suburbia. That's what we love about it! It's also close to downtown, which is where my wife commutes to now. That would not be important in Fort Worth. We are not opposed to classic suburbia, but really prefer a place that has a little more to offer than all chain restaurants and stores.

Our budget would be 500k plus.

This is part joke and part truth, but do we have to worry about snakes down here? I'd like to be in an area where the chances of having a poisonous snake in my yard would be less likely! Freaks me out even thinking about it.

I really appreciate any help you might be able to offer. Anything about what to expect in the area and what areas to look at, would be awesome!

Elizabethtown? I've lived in DFW for most of my life and I've never heard of this place. Is that a street?

Snakes are not an issue in most residential areas unless you are near a body of water, or a heavily wooded area.

Walkable and DFW area are usually mutually exclusive terms. From late May to mid September, you won't want to walk anywhere here due to the intense heat.

North Fort Worth was cow pastures and open prairies just 10-15 years ago, so there really aren't any older communities around that area. Justin has a few businesses along 407, but that's about it. DFW is just a very car-centric place...

Sorry on Elizabethtown. I just saw it on google map. Near the Fort Worth Alliance Airport.

Have lived in far north Fort Worth for 13 years have never heard of Elizabethtown. In doing a Google search apparently this is a ghost town south of Denton. Is your wife working in Denton or Fort Worth? Far north Fort Worth is brand new massive cookie cutter suburban sprawl. It's not walkable and is big box store - chain restaurant nirvana. Traffic is pretty bad in that area.

Flower Mound is very nice. Good schools and a nice town center with family activities.

Southlake would fit great. Also check out Trophy Club,
Lived in TX since 1978 and have only seen one snake. it was in the water at White Rock Lake.

Check out Flower Mound or Southlake, or for a less-expensive house, Sendera Ranch or Keller. For 500k you should be able to find a dreamy house with a pool.

I've never seen a snake in my yard here.

Snakes are venomous not poisonous.

Thanks for the snake tip! Also glad to hear my fears are maybe a "touch" overblown.

Thank you very much on all the info coming in. Are there any stereotypes/generalizations of these communities mentioned?
