In the Charlotte (NC) area a certain grocery chain promotes the cents-off with $$ spent deal, but after I signed up for it, all %#(( broke loose in the Gulf and that's the gas station brand they deal with!!!
Your normal price of $2.39 is about 60¢ - 70¢ less than what I'm paying!!
You must have the combo of high real-estate prices (making gas stations more of an investment and requiring higher returns) and of course the biggies of state\local taxes plus possibly special fuel mixes.
Our gas is running about $2.67 at the cheapest local station. The supermarket gives a point for every dollar we spend. For every 100 points you can save 10 cents per gallon at Shell. I think the last time we filled up we paid about $2.07
In light of the oil spill in the Gulf, if I paid $1.89 a gallon for gas today, I'd have to head straight to a confessional booth and confess that sin to a priest. And what would be my penance?
Enjoy it now 'cause I sense that we as taxpayers are going to be the ones who eventually pick up the tab for this BP catastrophe through our tax $$ and increased prices at the tank. The environmental impact and loss of a major source of our oyster/seafood supply is traumatic enough....but I assure you, somehow someway the costs will be absorbed by those who use petroleum products (all of us).
Cheapest in my area according to gasbuddy.com today is $2.87
Albertson's here does a similar deal, but I only fill my tank once a month or so and the points expire every 7 days on a rolling calendar, so I don't bother. I also don't do much of my shopping at Albertson's anymore since they got bought out, it just isn't worth it. I took most of my money to WINCO. With the small amount of stuff I still buy at Albertson's, I think I could save .02 or .03 a gallon, but it isn't worth worrying about for my 12 gallon tank.
I know I'll catch flak for this, but I'm in the crowd who doesn't mind seeing higher gas prices, because I think most people consume too much of it in the first place. Higher prices make people think twice before running errands, so they are more efficient in driving around town. (Although it is unfortunate that that means transport costs go up as well, and thus food prices). I didn't mind paying $4 a gallon when I heard that consumption was down a large percentage. I'd happily pay $10 a gallon if it meant that the car companies would actually live up to their guarantees of more fuel efficient cars, and if people actually chose to drive them if they didn't have a sufficient need for an SUV or truck.
I wouldn't bring this up, except this is the frugal living forum, and I think being frugal with the natural resources we have available is important too.

I always plan my trips around 2 or more things . I really do try to save gas. That gas I paid for $ 1.89, I still have some in my tank !
I think alot of people are more careful with everything nowadays , including how much gas they consume. At least I think so

If gas went above $4 a gallon, the actual cost of gas would be the least concern for Americans.
The destroyed economy and the sky rocket prices on goods ( including groceries) would be devestating.
This recession would spiral downward into a catastrophic depression.
