There must be another mexico that I don't know about.. No AC needed in Mexico?
Not only AC, but a heater as well in many parts of Mexico. Remember the effect of altitude. Mexico City, Durango, Zacatecas, Lake Chapala, and even in Oaxaca in the depth of winter can be iffy.

The great majority of people in Mexico live in houses that have neither heating nor air conditioning. Yes, rich Mexicans have it, and as a spoiled American, you would demand it, but you wouldn't need it. Everywhere, it warms up in the daytime, so no big deal if it goes down to the 40s at night. I've never slept in a hotel room in Mexico that had AC, even in the Yucatan or the Pacific coast, or the Rio Grande valley.
Americans build a heating/cooling system and then design a house around it that depends on it, but that is not the architectural philosophy in Mexico.
There is a difference between being "essential" and "iffy". I agree, Durango and the highland places north of there up to Chihuahua, houses need some kind of stove or space heater. Such cold extremes would be easy to avoid by the American refugee seeking survival in Mexico.
