According to my calculations with my average yearly driving, every $1 increase in the gallon cost of gas increases my gasoline costs by about only $360. That's easily offset by the gains in my investments (energy stocks, commodities, etc.)
I would imagine that most of the financially savvy will have hedged against the increase of gasoline prices in a manner in which they will have to take on minimal change.
I would also imagine that the frugal folks are already frugal enough to take on any change in gasoline prices.
I doubt we will change anything to accommodate. We drive a minimal amount as it is, mostly because we prefer to be at home than out and about. I think both cars logged less than 3000 miles last year.
