Wow that is ingenious! Kroger bought Safeway so I'll not likely stick around after it is implemented but we have many organic restaurants in town. I just wonder how much food is leftover.
It costs us about $700 for organic food/grass fed meat for us per month so it would sure be nice to bring it home and just heat it up. It would save on electric bills too. Not sure I would get the exercise I do now so will take that into consideration
I'm confused about your post. The person you replied to managed a restaurant and was able to eat the food from there. Do you manage a restaurant too? Or do you believe that local restaurants would let you take home their food?
Also, if you pay $700 for grass fed meat every month you need to find a new source. We pay $149.

We buy it a few times a year so not sure what we pay.
I don't manage or work at a restaurant
While it’s sad about how much food gets wasted every day, the thought of retrieving it from a dumpster is unfathomable for most.
Yes, especially when there are food banks and churches and charities that are already quietly working with some restaurants to feed the poor and homeless with that excess food. One of the charities we help takes meals to the homeless that are hiding in the woods and under bridges.
Dumpster divers should be arrested for theft. I only say this because as a former business owner I could have been sued from one of those losers if they got hurt or if any food they stole made them sick.
As for giving extra food away. It is one of the first things in business class you are told never to do. You will lose more money giving it away then throwing it away. From personal experience I found this to be true. Once you give someone something for free they expect it and will stop purchasing items that they can beg off you for free.
I take much of our leftover food to the feral cats and chickens near my workplace. I feel better knowing the food isn't wasted, and perhaps it will help more of our baby birds survive predation.
No dumpster diving though. The cats can do that themselves.
