Even better yet, especially if you have a family, buy a second fridge and fill it with food. The idea is to shop once per month. We have 5 kids at home and they for some reason like to eat. Driving to the store cost more than paying for the electricity to keep the food cold.

You are supposed to put open top containers in the freezer to retain the cold air when you open it. Cold air spills out like a waterfall. The more of it that you can contain the less energy it takes to get to freezing, again.

That saves me on my gas and electric heating bill and does not affect the comfort.
Enough heat is generated between 8am and 8pm to last the night.

I agree you should not do it on a refrigerator.
They can have 12 hour cycles that would be affected. And defrost cycles.

Where I used to live we had easy access to the breaker panel. It was near the bedroom door.
We'd turn the water heater off when we were not home for a few days or longer.
We turned it on an hour before we needed it for everyone to shower. Then flipped the switch off until the next day. Water heaters really eat electricity. The panel was very convenient for us to do it that way.
