Around here Dollar General has good prices on a few staples but very limited selection so you can't do all your shopping there. Wal Mart has really low prices on a few loss leader items but for the most part prices are about the same as the local mom and pop store. I haven't lived near a Kroger in years so I have no idea.
I've done some looking around on other internet forums that touched on this topic and came away with Walmart being cheaper than Kroger when not dealing with coupons. It was often pointed out that Kroger had more sales. I do prefer Kroger for fresh meats and fruits. The meats and fruits at Walmart usually look past due.

When we were in Tucson, Fry's (Kroger) beat Walmart in the annual market basket, and our experience bore that out. Also, we weren't afraid to eat the meat and produce from Fry's. Walmart's always looked iffy.
Dollar stores are hit or miss when it comes to pricing. The 99 Cents Only stores are pretty good, but Dollar General and Family Dollar? Nope.
Kroger if you shop their sales will beat Walmart.
If I want a Walmart type store I go to Meijers: better produce, higher quality merchandise.
Dollar General/Family Dollar has a sucky selection and not good prices for what I shop for. I don't bother with them.

If I want a Walmart-type store, I go to Meijer: far fewer kids running around lacking parental supervision.
Though I'd personally NEVER think of Meijer as a "Walmart-type store".
