For myself, I can go 4 years before I have to dip into my RRSP's which is the equivalent to 401's in the US.

I can imagine some of you frugal people can go 10+ years.

I'd be cheating as my $1,293 pension is over half my monthly spending... And with the VA and Tricare I don't have (many) health insurance out of pocket expenses.

That said.... Over 20 years till I was broke.

About 2-3 years.. I'd have to buckle down but I'll get through it.

This is actually one of my motivation for being frugal.. to develop a safety net so that I don't have to scramble and do everything under the sun to not get terminated when I'm in an unfavorable situation at work (like being forced to endure prolonged stress that wasn't in the original job description.)

Of course, being fired has negative implications on your career but being forced to endure unnecessary or prolonged stress over time has negative implications on your health.

If I could only choose one, I choose my health.

And having ample savings allows me to make this choice if I'm in a bind.

Indefinitely, at this point. You work and spend with an eye toward creating financial security. Once you get there, well...

If push came to shove I could stop working now -- it would be tight, but doable. And my savings would last till 100.

We could easily live on 1 income. If we both lost our jobs, we could live until we could tap our 401ks without penalty and then until we could collect SS. Of course, we'd be doing pretty much nothing but surviving in that scenario. No money for travel or fun.

With no health insurance? Only 'til the cancer killed me. Up until I got cancer I could have lived until my retirement income kicked in.
