I almost never use my phone, but it's a safety thing. All I need is straight talk and text - no data, bells, or whistles. I use a laptop at home, and that's more than enough Internet access... I don't need to carry it around with me! I currently use Tracfone, and while it's nice that the minutes never expire, unfortunately, the service days do, so I'm obliged to buy minutes (they go hand-in-hand, so you're screwed) whether I need them or not...
Have any other cheapskates out there found something more efficient and less expensive?
Again, for just basic, simple, straightforward phone use (keeping current phone/number).

There are service-only cards (or service-only plans found online) where all you buy are more days. I buy 365 days at a time, with no increase in minutes.

For Tracfone? Where? All I see are options for adding minutes and days, just minutes, or just text. What would a year of that cost, and can you share a link?

Get on eBay and look for the tracfone sales (by tracfone, not a reseller). A year is less than $100 with some data - which can come in handy if you are lost and need some basic info. A Moto G power plus a year of service is about $150 all totalled. Tracfone was bought by Verizon, be aware. I'm testing out U.S. Mobile, which is a reseller that uses the Verizon towers. Too early to give a full critique, but the plans are cheap.
I'm looking more for a cheap basic phone PLAN than phone.
Tracfone is what I currently use, but it requires constantly buying more service days, even if you haven't used all the minutes.
Well your OP stated "phone" - not "plan".
And I'm not sure what you are talking about - Tracphone can be set up as a monthly autopay - $15 a month - unlimited talk and text, or if you want, $99 for 365 days of service (400 minutes).
