We have used Tracfone for many years now. We have been very pleased, and I just don't think you can beat it for the money.
I ain't gonna lie. I had a tracfone and the service was wonderful. IIRC, i had no issues with my el cheapo phone with the plan. However, I have a google pixel with verizon service and it's spotty where I live.

This is what I've been doing the past couple of years - I use dealzconnection and when I see a post that HSN has a brand new tracphone and a year of service for $59 - I just buy it and transfer everything over to the new phone. I haven't found anything as reliable as Tracfone in my area.
I almost never use my phone, but it's a safety thing. All I need is straight talk and text - no data, bells, or whistles. I use a laptop at home, and that's more than enough Internet access... I don't need to carry it around with me! I currently use Tracfone, and while it's nice that the minutes never expire, unfortunately, the service days do, so I'm obliged to buy minutes (they go hand-in-hand, so you're screwed) whether I need them or not...
Have any other cheapskates out there found something more efficient and less expensive?
Again, for just basic, simple, straightforward phone use (keeping current phone/number).
The best cheapskate advice is not to have a cell phone at all. You don't need one, just because everybody else has one. A landline is more than enough for me. I can understand why it's nice to have one for emergencies but what did you do before the cellphone arrived? You handled your emergencies well enough. It might have taken you longer to handle it, but it got done one way or another.

Actually, ANY cell phone that is charged can be used to call 911 even without service or minutes. Just pick an old one up at a thrift store and keep it charged in your glove box for emergencies on the road or when you're out walking or hiking.

Any suggestions for BYOP (Bring your own phone) plan which gives voice/text/data with validity for a few months like 6 or 12 months? I am a very limited user and will use wifi at work and home. so only during the travel will need to occasionally use data. please suggest
Check out AT&T's prepaid plans. I believe one offer is $25 per month for a new account, for a 12-month pre-paid plan. So $300, and there's probably an activation fee too.
