Cooking your own beans is healthier for you, too. The sodium content in canned foods is scary and the major cause for high blood pressure. It's great that you are cooking from scratch. Best thing for your body. As for dairy .... many of our health problems come from consuming dairy products. A human being is the only mammal on earth that continues to drink milk after being weaned from its mother. Still, ice cream is so yummy and I'll always find a way to justify that one! lol
a human being is also the only species on earth that talks, thinks far more critically than others, has immense brain capacity, and has created so much in this world. so maybe it's all because of milk?
sorry for the sarcasm - i just hate that "only mammal on earth that continues to drink milk" argument. we're the only mammal on earth that does a lot of stuff. i drink lots of milk, eat yogurt, love ice cream and i'm not sure what health problems you're speaking of, but i'm doing quite alright.

Put a quart of milk out in a dish in the backyard and watch at a distance - cats, dogs, and even squirrels will go after it. As will adult cows.
This is rather simple, but when I find myself in a bind every so often, it saves me a few bucks.
As we all know, our banks usually charge $2-3 to use foreign ATMs, and foreign ATMs often charge, too. If I need a few bucks on occasion, rather than using the ATM I just buy a candy bar (or something I actually need) and get cash back.
We all know about cash back, of course, but you'd be surprised at the number of kids I go to school with who use the foreign ATMs rather than making a small purchase when they're only looking to withdraw less than $60.
So if you hadn't thought about doing this before, here you go. :P
Every once in a while, loosen all your shoe laces, and move them an inch or so in one direction or another, so the tie end is longer on one side than the other. Shoe laces wear and break at bend points, so if you keep moving the bend points, they will last longer.
When tying your shoes, pull the ends away from each other to pull them tight, to minimize the angle of the bend going through the eyelet, and reduce the friction drag on the lace as it pulls through.
Try Mexican bars of soap. Look on a shelf near the laundry detergents for one pound bars, with brand names of Zote or Lirio. (Avoid Rosa Venus, it's too perfumey.) They are very close to the pure soap that you can buy at craft fairs, and are wonderful for shave, shower, shampoo. One pound bars cost about a dollar. Mexican women use them for laundry, but they're perfect for personal hygiene, too. If your supermarket doesn't have them, try a dollar store, or a Mexican specialty grocery.
My ex- was a hair stylist, and when I introduced her to Zote, she used it all the time for her own hair, but wasn't allowed to use it at the salon, because of liability issues.

You're right! I didn't stop to think about other animals who would drink milk, given the opportunity. My thought was that humans drink milk by choice and not just because someone put it in front of us. Guess I should have expanded a little more than I did.
As for the problems associated with milk and milk products, some people develop skin problems and others, digestive problems. Fortunately, we have wonderful digestive enzymes that help with that problem.
My apologies for stepping on toes here ... and I didn't mean to insult the dairy farmers (if there are any here)
Milk isn't "the perfect food" as the dairy industry would have us believe. We would all be fine with a little less milk. If you have a cold, pass on the milk, as it is a major player in forming mucus, which you want to avoid while you have a cold.

And nearly EVERY food has a small population of people who are allergic to it. Should we eliminate each food item that anyone is allergic to?
