How's this for an idea ??? We've decided to triple our garden this summer and just sent out an order for lots of cool heirloom seeds. Now if I could only find a coupon for garden seeds.....

Ooh.. coupons for garden seeds... wouldn't THAT be nice? I assume that if you need soil, you are buying it directly from the ground, instead of a store? Basically, we borrow a friend's truck, head over to the gardening store, and just buy a truck full of soil at a time. It saves time, money, AND it's green. (i.e. we don't have to unwrap so many bags of soil, we don't have to haul a lot of bags of soil out of a home depot, etc)

Yep. Buying bulk is the way to go. Mulch too, if you buy that. But this year I'll be prying open my rusty wallet to buy potting mix for the started-indoor seeds, due to having so many fungal problems in the garden soil. Happy gardening!

Oh yuck.. I am sorry to hear you have fungal problems.. perhaps you can find some yummy mushrooms in there somewhere :P ha ha... happy gardening to my dear husband... I am the lucky gal because I just get to mention what plants I want... but then again, he's the one who gets fed, so perhaps he's the lucky guy... anyways.. happy gardening to you, too!

Last year I saved up some of the cardboard egg cartons to start my seeds. Learned that a long time ago in grade school. There's another thread in here (https://www.city-data.com/forum/deals...ns-free-stuff/ ) where people post freebies they've found online or to order. Not all food and a lot of it is things you may not want. but it's interesting looking at what you can find.
How about a seed exchange? Seed Exchange - GardenWeb

That may be true, but by shopping Walmart, Target and all the chain stores, you're running the little stores, usually locally owned or smaller chains, out of business. I'm not saying don't shop the big stores, but, where I live, we have to drive 20 miles to the closest Walmart. You could save the gas by shopping at home. Plus Walmart's meat is overpriced and at times they put too much in a package.

Hey, Sherman, check out angelfoodministries.com . For $30 you can get enough food to feed a family of 4 for a week. Meat, frozen veggies, shelf stable milk, a dessert. The steaks are so tender you can cut them with a fork. Just my wife and I here and this will last us for a while.
