We have a some Coleus that has been in the ground about 3 weeks growing in a shelter area in the space between our home and the neighbors. Within this space, one side gets some morning sun, then goes into shade. The other side gets more sun throughout the day. The Coleus on the sunny side are all now starting to wilt. Up until now, they have been fine. The soil is clayish with some organic matter tossed in and mulch on top. We water both sides for a few minutes each morning. The plants that sit mostly in shade are doing fine. The only thing we did is water with Miracle Grow on Tuesday. The ground does feel pretty damp and not too dry. But if overwatering was an issue, I would think both sides would be suffering, especially the side in shade.
Any ideas? Does Coleus not tolerate a lot of full sun?
there are some very sun tolerant types of coleus but for the most part they do better in shade. Don't know where you are but the heat could be a big factor as well. Even if the soil is damp, some of my perennials are drooping from the extreme heat we are having here in NC.
Also they are not really established if they have only been in the ground since late July. Not a good time to plant anything. next year get them in earlier and they can withstand dry spells better. And make sure you know what kind of coleus you are planing and what the sun requirements are.
My coleus are doing great but they're under the eaves (north facing) so really are shaded most of the day and get some sunlight early morning and late afternoon.
Thanks I will need to check with the landscaper which type they put in.
