I have a soil question.

I need to do some topsedding/patchwork on my lawn. I bought a product at Home Depot by Kellogg called Topper. It's specifically geared toward being used as a top dressing. I find that with this soil, and other brands of soil I buy, it tends to have a lot of wood in it (like mulch). See attached image. Is this common for most soils? Is it to promote drainage and breathability? I had always imagined putting down a more loamy, fine soil. When I put this down in the patches, it looks more like fine mulch.

I'm not familiar with that product, but it sure looks closer to mulch than to topsoil. We've never had a problem buying bagged soil in the big box stores including Walmart and Lowes. You may also want to look at potting soil if you're just patching spots in your lawn. Potting soil normally seems to have more perlite in it than products sold as bagged topsoil.
