I live in Southern California (to give you an idea of climate) and my wife wants to get a plant to keep on our patio. We face north and have an overhang so our patio really sees very very little sunlight, if any. We can't have plants in the house because of pets (and no sunlight either). Are there any options or are we just out of luck?

Gardenia? There are some more shade tolerant varieties but they do like some morning sun.

Camelia, Azalea, Rhododendron, Hyrangea...all tolerate various degrees of shade.

Calidum, Ferns, Hostas, Fatsia (look this one up, it's grown for foliage), many palm varities,
visit a local nursery and ask them this question.
Usually their shade plants are located under the shade cloth display areas, that way you can see
what you like and what kind of blooms you want.

Since this is inside a porch that already faces north your lighting is, at best, indirect. You will need to look closely at plant tags at your local nursery for this lighting requirement.

You want to keep the plant in a pot. This combination of light and pot bound rules out many plants right away. Is this a hanging pot or one that will sit on a table?

On the table plants that may work: 'Dallas' Fern, 'Tiger' Fern, dwarf caladiums like "Miss Muffet" or "R Frill" (dwarfs get up to 16 inches) or plants that might be considered house plants like African Violets, Anthuriums, orchids, Spathiphyllum - aka Peace Lily- Dieffenbachia. In other words look at the houseplant section. If there is occasional dappled sun reaching the plant you could even try a Rex begonia and Anthuriums.

If hanging you can go for other ferns like the Boston, Kimberly Queen or 'Macho' fern, Golden Pathos, and Split-leaf philodendron.
