Can food be grown in tin? My local dollar store has these cute little 'buckets' that I thought would be good for herbs and beets, maybe short carrots. The painted ones I could use for flowers. I assume that metal is ok for food, is it?

Myself I never would plant vegetable, herbs in tin buckets. Especially from the dollar store, (or in this case any metal container from any store)due to rust and lead poisoning. I think anything like that is not safe, but that is just my personal opinion.

Chances are, those little buckets are made in China - lots of lead paint is used in China

I would think the metal would get pretty hot in the sun....not good for the roots of plants.
