Does anybody have experience growing clematis without a trellis? I have 3 clematis that seem like they will try to come back this year; they are all just a single stem sticking out of the ground with buds set. Last year I used some short 3 foot bamboo poles to make a pyramid around them, but they didn't take to it very well and outgrew them. I should mention that I bought them as bare root, so they didn't even start growing until like July, so I expect even more growth this year.
Is it all right to let them just grow with no trellis? Will they attach to other plants or just kind of weave in an out? Or should I build some sort of short horizontal trellis? I think they are the Jackmanii variety if that makes a difference.
