I plant impatiens every year, all around our shady areas. But these impatiens on our front porch get about 4-5 hours of sun a day. When the sun comes around to the south side of my house, these do just fine. These photos were taken about the first of July, 2013 Zone 7.

Yeah, I saw some "sunpatiens" at Wal Mart the other day. They were the New Guinea type and were very pretty.

Thank you, NMS!
As Spring and Summer progress, I add more and more flowers. It's a joy to sit out there.

Impatiens do very well on that porch, and get quite a bit of strong sun from mid afternoon to dusk. Don't know why they do so well....maybe THEY like the porch, too, and defy the rules....No Sun!

Yeah, that was me who planted the Vinca vine that I'm still trying to kill off lol!

Where do you buy the flowering Vinca? That looks like a great alternative. Maybe I could do Zinnias behind, since they grow taller.

I don't like perennials and grasses. Perennials tend to only bloom for a short time, and I already have some ornamental grass.

My "xeriscape" is probalby not true xeriscape. I have yucca and some small ornamental grass, but also Holly, Potentilla shrubs (nice for all Summer flowers), Elephant Ears, Banana Trees.... it's not a huge area, so I hand water things that need more.

That's why I never use them. I need to cover about 60 sq. feet of area, so price is a concern.

Nice! Did you paint the bench to match the flowers? Or buy the flowers to match the bench?

Salvia, Snapdragons, Marigolds, Dahlias, Gomphrena, Daises, Zinnia, all like full sun and some are drought tolerant. We plant Impatiens at the back of the house where they get shade most of the day and they do well. New Zealand impatiens also do well in full sun.
I heard the warnings about powdery mildew last year and it caused me to plant some begonias in with the impatiens just in case they died off. We had no trace of mildew in our area.
