The grass in my front yard was looking really great. All of a sudden, a light brown spot showed up and now it is spreading. The grass in the middle of the spot is dead as dead can be. You can see the ground between the dead strains of grass. What can this be and how do I fix it?

Most common problems are either fungus or grubs.
You didn't give much info. What kind of grass, watering habit, photos help.

Try raking it. A thatch rake works best. If you pull the grass up with the roots, it is grubs. If you just pull the dead thatch up, it is likely some type of fungus.

I will try raking it. It has been raining for the last 3 days. When that stops, I will try the raking. I have attached pictures. To the best of my knowledge it is Saint Augustine but could have other grass in there. I don't water it that much. Only when it hasn't rained in a while.

It is a fungus with the somewhat obvious name of brown patch.

Here is a nice summary.

I agree it looks like Brown Patch. The gradation of pale green to brown is a hint, and I"ll bet that brown area in the center is lower than the rest and collected more water during heavy rains. It doens't always kill the grass, which can recover if you get some dry time and cooler night temps. Lawn fungal diseases are a horrible problem when overnight temps are in the 75+ range. Combined with the overnight dew, those warm temperatures really promote the growth of the spores.

I went to Lowes today and got a bottle of fungus control by Bayer for brown patch . It hooks to your garden hose and you spray the grass. I will need to spray two more times 14 days apart. Will report back what happens.
