I just received a Norfolk Island Pine from my niece for Christmas. I'm wondering if it can be planted outdoors or if it is strictly an indoor plant>

I live on the far north coast of California. I got several Auracaria heterophyllas (Norfolk Island pines) about 10 years ago. I have way too many houseplants as it is, so I planted mine in big pots and keep them outdoors, but if there is a warning of a deep freeze, I take them into the garage, but other then a freeze, they are always outside in full sun and rain. But the lowest that we have been in the past 10 years is 22º, they take frost fine though.

I would suggest that it stay indoors in USDA hardiness zones 1-8, higher should be OK. We are in zone 8 and I keep mine indoors all year, since we may get to about 10F.
