Hello,
I have crabgrass that has grown into my sodded lawn. Is it possible if i rent a dethatcher that i can remove all of the crabgrass? I rented one in the spring and fertilized the whole season but the crabgrass still has spread to areas in my lawn. Please let me know if it is a good idea to try to remove the crabgrass with the dethatcher. thank you for your help and suggestions.
Most of the lawn related problems can be controlled but you need patience and understand the appropriate time to spread lawn chemicals. Minimum 1 year is needed to see results
Make sure to cleanup the extra stuff that wind up in the street because the storm drains will wash that into your Rivers and lakes and affect the drinking water. It's also why people should pick up after their dogs

Crabgrass is difficult to kill but it should not take a year. I mixed up a batch of weedkiller for crabgrass a couple weeks ago and the weeds are dead. I have found that the dry chemicals, such as the weed and feed types, are not very effective. You need to use weed killer that you mix up and apply with a sprayer. This also has the advantage of applying it only where it is necessary and not spreading lawn chemicals on the street.
The biggest problem I have found is that many of the crabgrass killers are ineffective. When I have found something that works, I find that it is not longer being sold when I attempt to purchase it again.
Crabgrass is an annual plant. In the same year it grows from seed (early spring), it becomes a crabgrass plant (summer), it produces seed (late summer), and then it dies completely (winter). The next year the cycle is repeated, starting with germinating seeds.
So, the only true way to avoid crabgrass is to use a crabgrass preventer. The crabgrass preventer is a herbicide that you use when the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees in early spring. That is the temperature that promotes crabgrass germination. If you wait until you have plants, there is nothing that you can do that will kill the crabgrass and leave the other grasses to live. At that point, just keep it all mowed.
I applied the preemergent twice this spring and heavy rains washed it away so I have crabgrass again. It's almost time to apply the fall preemergent for the stuff that grows during the winter
