Weed Be GONE! Cardboard along the walking path has worked for me past 2 years. No weeds to pull and Biodegrades by winter. Win Win.
Cam, do you put any cardboard in the garden field, beside the walking path. Last year, weeds are everywhere by the time of summer. How is cardboard compared to the weed control fabric? Is cardboard considered organic (maybe wrong word) for the garden?

I do not recommend the cardboard where things grow. Moisture doesn't go through the cardboard. I know about the losing battle with weeds. Not going to get into it with 1 post but one trick is to make sure you pull them before they flower! Once they flower, little weed seeds get in the soil and its never ending.

Sometimes I think they have a timer on them. Every time I start too early, they don't come up. But if I start towards end of March they do. Hoping my new seeds do better now.

Yes, they are all on the shelves by the window. Doesn't really get much sun through there. Maybe an hour in the afternoon. Could be sun related, don't know.
I did a soil layer test. Pretty cool, fun and easy. Dump some dirt into a jar, fill with water, shake, let settle. You can google it for more on it and how to do the calculations
A tiny bit of the organic matter fell down but its too small a fraction to be factored in. Surprising since I been adding compost for 2 yrs now.
This is where I land. I actually thought I would be Sandy Clay but I have more silt then I thought so it brought me more into the Clay area. Still.. It's Clay! lol
I need to add more Organic matter and find out what I can do to get more silt and less Clay.
The garlic and beans that I planted in Feb are doing well; the garlic is about 15-20cm tall, though the beans only sprouted about a week ago due to the below average March temperatures.
This weekend I am sowing more seeds - cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, carrot, onion, globe artichoke and fennel.
In late April I'll sow courgette, sweetcorn and runner bean seeds.
I'd like to try that, the soil here is basically sand, but it'd be interesting to see if there's anything else in there.
I'm interested too. Here's a YouTube video on Soil Layer test. Go to 1:00 for the start of the test. Let it sit for at least a day. This girl doesn't mention the silt though.
