sprinkle nuts on the surface - so they don't have to dig for them!

Even when I had dogs, the squirrels would just wait for them to go back into the house, and recommence their marauding.

Squirrels are a menace and I enjoy ending every one of their lives as I can!
Get them in your attic, and you too will dream of seeing all of them dead!

HAPPY HUNTING!
Sorry, but shooting them would be so against my nature.

I think the chicken wire idea sounds like a very good bet. I used some extra wire shelves that we had in our basement to protect three long deck planters and they are untouched. The ones that I did not have shelving to protect are all dug up (and I will likely need to replant those seeds), so I'm planning to get either more shelves or chicken wire for them. For round planters, I think my sister has successfully used an upside down wire colander / strainer, if you can find a size that works.

Seriously, this works. They HATE the smell of human urine...evidently they think that the human has "marked" that territory. Human Urine, an Animal Repellant? - Straight Dope Message Board
