What do you think about horse manure for plants and flowers? I know a woman who is trying to sell her tiller and added in 2 truckloads of free 6 year old horse manure as an incentive. I have a friend who wants to check out the tiller but doesn't want the horse manure at this time.

at 6 yrs old it should be ok but 2 truckloads?

Unless you've got a very very very large area to spread it on, pass.

Aged horse manure is excellent for gardens.

If it is 6 years old, I would take it and be happy to get it.

There should be no reason why your friend can't buy the tiller without accepting the free manure.

Aged horse manure doesn't necessarily mean it's composted horse manure and it might have undamaged and still viable weed seeds in it. I'll gladly use horse manure but only if I know for sure it has been properly composted (well cooked) and rotted in a hot compost pile and there's no viable weed seeds in it that can be introduced and sprout and invade the garden beds.

I'd gladly take the horse manure, it's good stuff, but would pass on the tiller.

What's six yrs old? The manure or the horse?

Manure that's been sitting for 6 yrs should be just about the quality of humus at this point. Any undesirable seeds in it would have already germinated by now.

How big is the truck? PU (~ 1 yd) or a 3-9 yd dump truck? One cu yd of manure can be spread ~ 3 in deep over ~100 sq ft (10' x 10')-- just for perspective.

I'm a big fan of horse manure as a soil amendment, but it loses its N content with age (out-gasses as NH3) and loses it's fibrous quality over time as it breaks down. It's those two factors in particular that makes it good as an addition to the garden soil.

FRESH horse manure is just fine too.
But you'll want to live upwind of the garden

Always used rabbit manure myself. The horse manure I tried once stunk too much.
