I'm in the same zone as you (NYC metro area) and I don't think we have enough time. Maybe something that comes up jackrabbit quick like, hm, love-in-a-mist (Nigella)? I had a big patch of those self-seed at our last house and would see seedlings come up in mid-September. But I don't think they had time enough to flower before our first frost.
That said, a few of the bigger little guys (we're talking less than 6" high) did manage a tiny flower or two before being zapped for the season, as I recall.
Do you have a protected area like an inside corner of the house that has a south, west, or southwest exposure? Best chance for anything seeded now would probably be in a spot like that.... a warm, protected microclimate.
As far as veggies, you could plant some snow peas and maybe get some flowers and maybe even a few pea pods before it freezes. But, even they need 12 weeks to full harvest size - before frost. That would put you into the beginning of December. But, you could get some pea flowers and the vines are pretty, and you might even get some pea pods you could eat.
I'm thinking to toss out the dying cherry tomatoes on my balcony and try some snow peas next week. Of course, I'm in the SF Bay Area, too, so our weather is milder. But, hey, seeds are cheap, right? Worth a try.
