I adopted a bird of paradise to help nurse it back to health. It started growing some new leaves and I’ve been monitoring them daily. Today when I checked, one of the new leaves that has just barely started to poke out where it can be seen, had busted out about 3” below and bent, almost snapped in half. I have no clue why this would happen and would love any tips on how to prevent in future and/or try to save this leaf.

It seems as if the leaf didn’t have enough room to grow upwards so it only had the option of bending outward and breaking the leaf? I would really like to save the leaf if possible

I'm having a hard time visualizing this impacted leaf that is almost snapped in half and unfortunately you don't have enough posts here yet (10 or more posts) that would allow you to start downloading photos of it to the forum. Is it possible for you to post pictures that are being hosted on some other photo hosting site?

Without seeing it and not understanding what you're talking about, all I can suggest is that you observe the behaviour of the leaf as it continues to emerge from the crown and grow but don't interfere with it. After it has fully emerged and unrolled itself it might plump up at the folds and be perfectly fine. Or you might have to cut off a portion of the leaf if it is actually broken and torn up in places, or it's possible the whole leaf might have to be removed if it looks like it is diseased.

Did you re-pot the plant into a bigger pot when you brought it home or is it still in the same original pot it was in? If it's still in the same original pot then you need to get it out of there and transplant it into a bigger pot that will allow more room for the growth of the crown and root system. If the crown and roots don't have enough room that can cause deformities in leaves and stems.
