DC metro area. See google drive link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...H8?usp=sharing

In early spring, I applied Crabgrass Preventer & Weed Control, which it did not prevent the weed (actually, the weed did not die during winter, maybe).

Then during summer, I sprayed Ortho Weed B Gon Weed Killer, which could not kill this kind of weed.

Weed preventer (early spring, before weed sprouting), and weed killer during summer, that is all I have done throughout the year. I don't want to spray Ortho Weed B Gon Weed Killer more than once on lawn during same year, it may hurt lawn. But it seems that Ortho Weed B Gon Weed Killer is not strong enough to kill the weed, no matter once or twice or three times.

Actually, lawn does not look that bad, I just mow it in 2", and apply some grass seed. When it grows to 3" or 4", it looks better (can cover some bare spots).

Thanks.

If the flowers are star shaped it is Virginia Buttonweed. For your sake I hope it is not.

God, it is not Virginia Buttonweed in that photo, but after searching Virginia Buttonweed, I do have Virginia Buttonweed in some other parts of lawn and flower beds. Virginia Buttonweed is annoying, not sure how to get rid of it.

Before your post, I don't know it is called Virginia Buttonweed.

Thanks for the information, is there an easy way to get rid of Virginia Buttonweed?

You are trying to remove a broadleaf weed and let grass grow. Use a broadleaf type herbicide. Ask your supplier for an auxinic herbicide. Apply it as required on the container.

Not that I have found. I use a common weed killer and spray it whenever it pops up again and again and again. I have even dug it up and it comes back. I had it in Alabama and Louisiana and I thought I got away from it in Arkansas, but I did not.

Timing is everything. Try a pre emergent in early spring. It may help if whatever it is comes back from seed. If it is a perennial with stolons, you will need to identify and target it with the effective herbicide. I could not identify it from the picture. If you can get a better picture, try google lens.

Your county extension service can help you ID and advise the best remedy.

or pull it up by hand if its Wild Violet. It does work but its labor intensive. I'm filling 1-3 Five Gallon buckets each year and its working. None are showing up in the areas I'm pulling them. Sprays didn't work for it. Look at the root!
