I just throw the old pumpkins/gourds into a corner and see what comes up in the Spring. I usually get a few usable ones. Squirrels will work them over.

As mentioned, if you're composting them mash them up.

They're in there, all cut in half, freezing every night and thawing every day, which should certainly help them disintegrate.

Don't bother looking at them everyday. A compost pile in winter is like a 401k or IRA. You can contribute to it but don't keep looking at it everyday expecting results right away, its a long term process and you'll be rewarded in the long run.. Let us know how they are in June.
