So I picked up this sago palm yesterday and am wondering how to care for it. The instructions say 'low water' , whatever that means. The rocks are cemented in there so unfortunately there is no way to feel the soil for dampness. . Also, you can see a few leaves are already turning brown. I really like it and hope to keep it looking healthy. Any info is greatly appreciated.
Yeah, the brown is not right. Pull it out of that rinky dink pot and scrape off the gravel. It will need water about once a week in regular potting soil, more or less when it's almost bone dry.
Sagos only put on growth once a year. Something must have burned it or injured it. Can you take it back and trade it for another?
The more you neglect them the better. I have 2 in the yard, but I am in south texas and winter is when it hits 35 at night with an occasional frost. They do tolerate frost but not a freeze. They like full sun, and hot. It might grow indoors if it's in a south window or south side of the house out of any cold wind. Also, there is a female and male plant. they will not propagate without sex. Imagine !!!!!! Yours is too young to be able to tell if it is female or male.
these Sago Palms actually date to the time if of the dinosaurs. The like LOTS of light. Water when it rains in Arizona.
