Someone cut two small pieces off the top of a small bamboo plant about 1 foot long each. It is the top part of the plant. I took them and put them in a pot with an inch of water and I've had them for about 3 days now and they still seem fresh. I am hoping I can get two small bamboo plants out of it. Is it possible for them to start rooting in water or is that only a certain species (lucky bamboo)? This species I have seems to be a house type bamboo for porches.

All I have ever done is cut the bamboo and plant it.
Never rooted it first.

That stuff is pretty hardy and grows like crazy, takes to root fairly quickly.

Good luck

But will bamboo root if you cut it half way on the stalk above the roots?

if you have a bamboo growing outside and you cut the top off and plant it, it should grow.
I know the ones here do.
And im in AZ so if itll grow here it should grow anywhere...LOL

I think that is what you are asking??

Make sure you really, really, really want bamboo before you plant it. It's a lot more difficult to undo and there is no easy button later.

Bamboo is cool, but it does take over. i remember when we lived in CA, our friends couldn't get rid of it. The root system was unreal.

There are 2 types of bamboo..."clumping" & "rampant". If you have a "back 40" & don't mind a bamboo forest, plant rampant. If you have property size restrictions or close neighbors, plant clumping.

Bamboo is a grass with similar characteristics to it's smaller cousins...some grasses stay in a clump, some send offshoots everywhere...

A lot of varieties look similar, so it's best to find out what type you have before you plant!!
