I've never seen a snake in the wild, except for the occasional garter years ago.

Wish there was one around here that liked to eat slugs .. or maybe not. Snakes give me the willies.

Oh, that smooth green snake is a beauty as is the blue racer! We only have the black variety of racer here. I encounter them on my walks now and then.

My guess from your pictures is that your visitor is a DeKay's Brown Snake. They do not seem to be venomous (or there would be red warning text on enature.com) so I'd say s/he's a good snake. S/he'll be hunting slugs, earthworms and snails in your garden for her dinner.

Intellectually, I appreciate them and respect their place in nature.
But I don't like to see them in my yard or in my woods.
I would never intentionally hurt one, but they do give me the creeps.

We had a snake in our basement a few weeks ago.. my son measured him, 27 inches long.
He's not alive any more...
