I know it is early for this, but I wanted to prepare for the Socal winter in Nov. I was wondering if there were any trick or tips of caring a small potted garden during the cold months. Here in Socal, it get to the 30's to 40's during the winter. I was just wondering when I should start and the fertilizers I should use. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

It really is too early to start. Do you intend to keep your plants outside or do you cover or otherwise protect the ones that are tender?

One of the main things you should do is to remember to stop feeding them in the middle of August. That keeps them from putting on delicate new growth and allows recent growth to mature or harden off.

For potted plants I prefer something along the lines of Osmocote. It's a time-release bead that lasts 3-6 months depending on the one you buy. Many professional growers use it or similar products.

So all you have to do is fertilize everything now with the three month beads and keep them watered.
