I have a mature queen palm in my yard growing up into a magnolia. I want to move it about 40 yards and replant it. It's about 25 feet high. How far away from the trunk should I start digging? Does it have a tap root? What other advice can you give so I can give it the best chance to survive in it's new location?

I'd say Georgia.

Seriously, I am not sure how big a root ball you will need. Perhaps confer with a nursery that sells palms. I have seen mature palms being planted in LA. Their root balls were not very imposing, but they were not Queen Palms. In any case, get some friends to help.

You should consider contacting a company that specializes in transplanting large trees using a tree spade. A 25' tree is as tall as a house. I wouldn't tackle this project myself. A 10' tree alone with rootball can be well over 200 lbs and take 3-4 people to transplant with any chance of surviving.

A Queen Palm that tall needs at least a 4x4x4 rootball for transplanting and should be done by a professional with a hydraulic spade and crane since it will weigh approx a ton.

I am with the others on bringing in a professional. This is not a project you want to handle yourself.
