They also served in the german army. Some of them were for Hitler and others against him.
The most notable family member being Generaloberst Carl Hilpert, commander of Army Group Kurland during WW2.Far as I have been able to read about him in english, and what little I can understand in german, he was a good example to his men shared the same hardships they endured ,was very brave, and a decent fellow.Haven't seen anything yet about him ordering killings of russian civilians or jews on the eastern front. He came from an old bavarian catholic family with a long history of military and civil service to country and king.
Would love to go to Germany to Nuremberg and look at the family history book my cousins have. Sure there maybe scoundrels on both sides of the family, but I'm not concerned about it,the past is the past.
Enjoy your genealogical journey. It will get frustrating at times, but it is well worth it. And remember, if you hit a brickwall or need some advice, there are lots of us here willing to help

Have you seen this page with your ancestor's photo?

My family's earliest traceable ancestors were pirates who sailed to Scotland, subdued the natives, and took over the land. Real nice guys. No one talks about that part when we're discussing tartan patterns, though- they just talk about how we're Scottish!

The red haired Scots had to come from someplace.

It would be refreshing if more people had some genuine historical context to understand the past.

The only ones I'm even remotely ashamed of are the darn stubborn ones who left no records of themselves for me to find! Ungrateful lot of them.

I agree! I'm ashamed of the ones who left the birth/marriage/death records in the front section of the family Bibles blank!
