This is a really long shot! Frederick Sedgwick Abbott founded our town here in New Zealand about 1860. In 1872 he disappeared, we suspect that he crossed the US and somewhere on the way he got married as I have his marriage (second) certificate for 1885 where he is described as a 'widower'. Any suggestions?
The 1920 Census shows a Frederich Abbott in Pasadena Township, Los Angeles, California.
Born 1866 in New Zealand, Married to Ruby (born 1876 in California).
Also noted on the Census is Mary E White (Ruby's mother), born 1849 in Iowa.
Ruby & Frederick also appear on the 1910 census in CA.
On the 1930 census Ruby is listed as a widow, still living in Pasadena, CA.
Ancestry has naturalization info: Frederick John Abbott, born 7 Jun 1865 in New Zealand, issue date 16 Oct 1918, petition for naturalization, Southern District, Central Division, Los Angeles, California, District Court

A Frederick Abbott who was born in 1865 is not going to have founded a New Zealand town about 1860. He may be a son, but it's obviously not the same individual.

Very true... guess that is what I get for trying to "play" and "work" at the same time. Only skimmed the original post.. oops. Sorry about that Ciderman.
Thanks for the thought and input but he was born in 1825 in London, England. That much I know and that he's buried in Jersey in the Channel Islands. He founded our town here in NZ but he left in 1872 and we can't track him down again until 1885 back in the UK. 13 years gone missing!
Wouldn't it be a lot more likely that he went to Australia?
Sorry I've only just picked up on this. Australia was high on the list but we've had no luck there and we suspect that his second wife (Ida Gostenhofer ) had been to the USA and maybe married her Gostenhofer husband there.
As the founder of a town, I would have thought that local historians would have already extensively researched him. If professionals can't find him, the records may simply not exist.
I am one of those local historians. I work part time for our local museum so I have access to anything here but he's still got those years missing.
