Thanks, everybody, for the suggestions!

One has to start somewhere, so I might as well start with ancestry.com. I've already found some fun facts about my grandparents, Looking at the 1930 census, it almost looks like a game of monopoly. They listed my grandparents, along with neighbors, along the street. the typical rent was about $50, just like Monopoly! Interesting to find they checked if one had a radio. About 1/4 of the people in his neighborhood had one. Its really just trivia, but interesting to me. And you're so right, it is addictive, I should put a timer on it!

I tried the 14 day free trial last summer. I got totally sucked into it and it didn't take long to figure out how to dig and find information. Also, the Family Tree feature helped a lot. I wish I'd started building that earlier. It gave a lot of information I'd had to dig around for. I had a blast with it and found so much information on both sides of my family.

After the free trial was over I canceled with no problem. Nothing was charged to my card.

Ditto, and some of them have been delightful people with whom I now have a regular email friendship....a very nice bonus from genealogy.

I spent several years, on and off, on Ancestry. In three months you could get your tree completed and then unjoin for awhile. I got the resarch done in several short spurts, and now I eagerly await the 1940 census when I will join again to tie up some loose ends.
I have tried other sources, but for me there wasn't anything much there.

I found my birth mother/family information on a message board I posted on Rootsweb. Have met many relatives and have been able to get a family medical history.

And FYI, the 1940 census will be released early 2012, but I don't remember the month.

I used the free trial and the website did help me find a few things I did not know previously. But I seemed to hit a wall regarding anything prior to their immigrating to the USA. So I canceled it, I couldn't see anything much of value worth $150 for 6 months. It is ridiculously overpriced in my opinion.

Three months? Now I'm wondering what have I been wasting the last thirty years on, and why I have all those missing ancestors, if it only takes three months to complete a family tree.
